New Study Gives More Insight Into Lockyer Valley Food Bowl

A new report on the development of horticulture in the Lockyer Valley – one of Australia’s major vegetable growing regions – was launched today in Grantham, Queensland.

Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said the Coalition Government invested $15,000 to help develop the study.

“The Lockyer Valley is one of the major food bowls of Australia, so getting a closer look at how production goes from plant to plate is extremely important,” Mr Buchholz said.

“This report will promote a greater understanding of the horticultural industry, identify future opportunities, trends and industry needs within the valley.”

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the report provides baseline statistics on horticultural production in the region.

“Until now most of this data was not readily available, which meant the council had to engage with peak industry bodies and government departments to receive the relevant information,” Dr McVeigh said.

“This is a report which will be drawn upon by government, industry and community groups to help better plan for the future.”

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said the funding provided by the Coalition Government allowed the council to complete this unique project.

“We now have a greater understanding of our region’s horticultural production and its capacity to grow, and we also have a better understanding of the scale and variety of crops being grown in our region, as well as the volume and scale of green waste,” Cr Milligan said.

“This funding will also allow us to explore further opportunities for potential innovation into the future.”

This $20,000 project was jointly funded with the Coalition Government investing $15,000 and Lockyer Valley Regional Council providing $5,000.
