Sky Muster to improve regional communications

Wednesday, 21 November 2018

Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz today welcomed the announcement by NBN Co’s plan to provide increased data allowances for regional Australians using Sky Muster satellite services, saying that it recognises that people living in regional Australia have the same internet requirements as those living in cities.

“With regional Australia producing 70 per cent of Australia’s exports with just 30 per cent of the population, increased data capacity is important to ensuring we build on our economic success,” Mr Buchholz said.

“By removing the data cap it will allow households to go about their daily internet tasks like checking email, searching for information and ordering online without any hesitation about reaching their data limit.”

Scott Buchholz said the new product is to be known as called Sky Muster Plus and it will provide unmetered monthly data for web-browsing, email and software updates, and is expected to be available in 2019.

“Sky Muster Plus will also have the ability to ‘burst’ to download speeds above 25 Megabits per second (Mbps) when there is spare capacity on the network,” Mr Buchholz said.

“We have also invested around $2 billion in the Sky Muster satellites and NBN Co is continually exploring innovative ways to enrich lives in regional, rural and remote Australia.  This helps grow regional economies that then are able to create more jobs and provide greater opportunities.”
