I welcome with open arms the announcement of grants being made available to primary producers in the Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley.

These farmers have been hit by drought and fire; we know first-hand that many producers lost infrastructure, assets, stock and in particular fencing.

The Prime Minister committed our government to helping communities to rebuild, to get back on their feet after the devastating fires.

This announcement of cash grants is that commitment in action.

I urge farmers to not self-asses and to apply, if you are uncertain speak to QRIDA (Queensland Rural Industry Development Authority) and they will help guide you to access assistance.

I’ve worked with local Members, Jon Krause and Jim McDonald, to ensure we cut through bureaucracy and outline what the needs of our rural communities are.

Many producers have lost a lot, some have lost far less – but all losses matter and everyone’s situation is different. There have been losses of small crops, on-farm assets, water and larger losses of grazing land and fencing.

I completely empathise with those farmers and farming households that have sustained losses and are working harder than ever to get their operations back up and running.

A time comes in all political careers, when representatives look back and ask themselves if they made a difference.  This is one of those times for me, where I know I can say, “Yes, you have made a difference”.
