HELIDON VOLUNTEERS CRAFTING BETTER FUTURE

Wednesday, 17 April 2019

Scott Buchholz, Federal Member for Wright recently joined the Helidon Community Shed to announce funding had been secured under the Liberal National Governments Volunteer Grant program.

In attending the Shed for an afternoon tea, Scott Buchholz congratulated all involved in the ongoing success of the community shed, saying the group was doing tremendous work.

“We have some really great volunteers at the shed, they are doing a marvelous job not only providing a social hub, but helping younger people with skills and providing an asset long-term.

“After being at the shed and talking with the volunteers, it is clear the shed is extremely important to the local community and I am pleased we can support them with funding to continue their work.

Under the Liberal National Government’s Volunteer Grants program the Shed is set to receive $4,950.

Co-coordinator of the Shed, Noeleen Hogan thanked Scott Buchholz for his support of the shed.

“Scott Buchholz recently came to the shed for an afternoon tea with locals that use the shed and we appreciate Scott’s support of the shed.

We have taught a few younger people how to sew and through our support gave them the confidence to give it a go.

“We are a not-for-profit group, we provide activities and space for people to come down and enjoy, if they want to make new friends or just get a break,” Mrs. Hogan said.

Born from natural disaster following the 2011 floods, Noeleen mentioned that the shed stood for strong and resilient community spirit.

“We are also here to support emergency services in the unfortunate time of natural disaster. We have a shower, toilet, kitchen, and lounge and can provide food, clothing and support in the unfortunate event of natural disaster,” Mrs Hogan said.

Scott Buchholz said volunteering has a strong presence throughout the community, whether it be providing social support or responding to natural disasters.

“The entire Helidon community appreciates the contribution the shed makes to our local community,” Mr Buchholz said.

The Liberal National Government has invested $20 million in Volunteer Grants to recognise the valuable role volunteers play in building more resilient and cohesive communities and supporting individual participation in community life.
