Federal MP for Wright Scott Buchholz has appealed to the federal and Queensland governments to immediately fix the unacceptable delay in getting money to the victims of the Lockyer Valley floods, many who have still received nothing.
Mr Buchholz labelled the State government incompetent in a speech to parliament yesterday.
My people who have been displaced are still either living in motels or staying with family members who have generously opened their hearts because our state government does not have the capacity to take money out of one account and put it into another. It is totally unacceptable for this to continue for 50 days.
To date, over 227 million dollars has been raised through the disaster fund and very little has been distributed.
Mr Buchholz said that while people were already struggling, the federal governments carbon tax only makes it worse for flood-ravaged regions like his.
It is beyond belief that the Prime Minister would impose more taxes and charges on communities that are still trying to put their lives back together, he said.
Is the Prime Minister human? Does she really understand the emotional pain she and the Greens are causing everyday people? he asked.
He pointed out that many people in the Locker Valley and the Scenic Rim regions are now without jobs and houses and some cant even bury their loved ones because they are still missing.
Yet the Prime Minister believes this is the time to raise electricity prices, fuel prices, grocery prices and add to the anguish of those already suffering.
He said the attitude of both the Premier and Prime Minister was unconscionable. The Prime Minister needs to show some heart and drop the carbon tax while the Premier needs to do whatever it takes to get money to the people who desperately need help, even if it means driving there herself and handing out cheques, he said.
