Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz is calling for residents, ex-service organisations and historical groups to nominate a local ANZAC in the lead up to ANZAC Day 2021.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic meant the cancellation of thousands of ANZAC day services Australia.
“Each year, I send a brochure to the community outlining the various services in the area.
“Sadly, in 2020 we were unable to promote the services and encourage residents to attend a service, to commemorate our fallen and our service personnel.
“In place of promoting services, I told the various stories of local people that paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation. Through the Queensland State archives and Australian War Memorial, we sourced the stories, pictures – many largely untold – and developed a ‘stories of our local ANZAC’s’ brochure.
“I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, they were interested in these stories and asked for us to provide even more. Now we need the community to help to do that.
“If you know of a story, someone local that has served or is serving in some way – where possible and safe to do so – we want to hear their story and share it with the community,” Mr Buchholz said.
Mr Buchholz said the region had a rich history with the defence community, particularly with the proximity to various barracks, training centres and air bases.
