Disaster assistance has been made available for the Scenic Rim communities of Canungra, Beechmont Township, Binna Burra, Sarabah and parts of Illinbah for those affected by severe bushfires currently burning in the region.
Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz whose electorate of Wright includes the Scenic Rim, where fires have impacted residents in Canungra, Beechmont Township, Binna Burra, Sarabah and parts of Illinbah, welcomed the announcement.
“I welcome this assistance through the DRFA to support residents in those areas that have worn the brunt of this disaster.
“I have been in regular contact with the Minister for Emergency Management, providing him with updates from the Mayor and emergency personnel.
At this stage there have been a number of homes lost and our hearts go out to those people. Many other residents have been displaced and remain so.
“The Federal Government is working closely with the Queensland Government, as communities battle these blazes and I thank all involved for the high level of cooperation at this time of need,” Scott Buchholz said.
State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said many residents were on edge, but strong community support was comforting those affected and the community deserved a huge pat on the back for pulling together at a difficult time.
“Locals are worried, tired and the unknown is a struggle for them. But everyone is rallying to support each other.
“This support from the Federal and State Governments is highly welcomed. This will go some way towards comforting families for who there are tough days ahead,” said Jon Krause.
